What should I check before putting a new floor in my basement?
Basement flooring in Calexico starts with the slab under it, so we test the concrete for moisture, repair what needs repairing and only then put down the floor you choose, whether that's a coating, vinyl plank or something else.
If you've got a tired floor or a damp spot by the wall, it's tempting to buy a waterproof plank and be done, but one maker of waterproof vinyl plank says moisture problems have to be found and corrected before installation because its floor isn't meant to act as a moisture barrier. What you pay mostly comes down to the size of the room, what's on the floor now and whether it has to come up, how much repair the slab needs and which floor you pick. The schedule turns on that same moisture test, since a damp slab has to dry or be treated before anything goes on it, and the written estimate I give you lays out both for your floor.
How we handle basement flooring
In a basement the floor is only as good as the slab it sits on, so I check for moisture and cracks before you choose what goes down. When an old floor has to come up, we lift it carefully so it doesn't throw dust into the room, which lines up with one flooring maker's guide on older resilient floors, since it says their backing and adhesive may contain asbestos and should be presumed to unless you know otherwise, and that they come up without sanding or dry scraping. After that we clean the slab, fill its cracks and holes, and put the new floor down over sound concrete.
Most of what decides whether a basement floor holds happens before the finish goes on. A coating usually needs concrete grinding and surface preparation first so it bonds to clean, open concrete instead of old glue. If you'd like to keep the slab as your floor, concrete sealing gives it a finished surface.
Basement flooring permits and licenses in Calexico
Whether a basement floor needs a building permit depends on the job, and in the city that question goes to the City of Calexico Building Division, which issues permits, checks plans and confirms work meets code and state rules. If your job needs one, I'll tell you at the estimate, and we handle the paperwork with the city or county office that covers your address and book the inspections. On licensing, California's flooring contractor license from the state licensing board covers preparing the surface and installing carpet, resilient tile, wood and other floors, but it leaves out ceramic tile, so if you're planning tile, ask which license that work falls under.
If you want to know where your house sits for flooding before you plan a basement floor, the county's flood zone map index helps you find the map for your area. We're based in Calexico and run the same moisture checks on jobs in El Centro and Heber, and if you don't see your city on our site, call and ask.

Why Calexico homeowners call Calexico Precision Epoxy Flooring for basement floors
On site while we work
The same person who looked at your slab and wrote your estimate is on site with our crew while the work gets done. You never have to explain your floor twice or wonder who's in charge.
Concrete prep learned on crews
I grew up fixing what broke on my family's farm and learned concrete prep and coatings on other crews before starting this business in Calexico in 2023. That's why we put our time into the slab under your floor, since that part decides whether it holds.

We're licensed and fully insured. I'm glad to show you both at the estimate, before you sign anything.
Plain answers about your slab
If your slab tests damp, I'll say so before you pick a floor, even if it steers you toward something other than what you had in mind. I'd rather you hear it from me now than find out after the floor is down.
Your satisfaction, guaranteed. Ask for a visit and I'll check your slab before you spend anything on flooring.

Questions about basement flooring in Calexico
Can you put carpet over a bare basement slab?
Over a bare slab that isn't insulated, it's usually a bad idea. Department of Energy guidance says to skip carpet or vinyl on an uninsulated basement slab, because both trap moisture and invite mold. If you want carpet down there, plan on insulating the slab first or look at another floor, and I'll go over both with you.
Is vinyl plank a good basement floor?
It can be, once the slab's moisture has been checked and handled. Luxury vinyl plank stands up to dents and scratches better than laminate, it's waterproof, and most people find it looks like real hardwood, but as noted above, a waterproof plank won't stop moisture coming up from the slab. It can float like laminate or be glued down for a more solid feel underfoot, and the same caution about uninsulated slabs from the carpet answer applies here too.
How do I insulate a basement slab before putting down a new floor?
One Department of Energy method starts by cleaning the slab and sealing its cracks and holes, then laying a plastic vapor barrier or plastic dimple mat with the seams taped. Rigid foam insulation goes on next, and a floating subfloor, a base that rests on the foam, goes on top. It adds height and work to the job, so it's worth deciding on before you pick the finished floor.
How do I know if my basement slab is too damp for new flooring?
A moisture test tells you, and for glue-down floors the maker's adhesive sets the limit the slab has to meet. One maker's glue-down vinyl guide says a slab that tests over the adhesive's limits has to dry further or get a moisture-mitigation system first, and you can ask to see the test results before the floor goes down. Damp floors often come from the air itself, since indoor vapor turns to water on a floor cooler than the dew point, the temperature where that happens, and rainwater can wick through foundation walls that lack moisture barriers.
Does a small flooring job need a licensed contractor in California?
Unless the whole job is under the state's $1,000 small-job limit, it does. California raised that limit from $500 to $1,000, and it only holds when the work can't require a permit and the person doing it has no employees. If they bring a helper or the job could need a permit, they need a license whatever the price.
How much does basement flooring cost in Calexico?
It comes down to the room, the floor you choose and how much the slab needs before that floor can go on. Taking up an old floor, treating a damp slab or building up insulation and a subfloor all add to the job, while a coating or sealed concrete on a dry, sound slab usually keeps it simpler. I don't put a number on it until I've tested your slab, and then you get it in writing.
Other work that goes with a basement floor
Concrete Grinding & Surface Preparation
Grinding opens up sealed, stained or patched concrete so a new coating or adhesive grips the slab instead of sitting on old residue and dirt.
Concrete Sealing
If you'd rather keep the bare concrete in your basement, a sealer helps hold down dust and makes the floor easier to sweep and mop clean.
Book a moisture check for your basement
Have the room size, what's on the floor now and any damp spots you've noticed ready when you call, so I can plan the visit around your floor.
