Can my concrete floor be stained, and what will it take?
Stained concrete flooring in Calexico gives the concrete floor you already have a color of its own. A sealer goes on once the stain is dry, so you end up with a finished floor without tearing anything out.
Most people who call me have a bare slab under old carpet or tile, or a floor that got painted at some point, and they want something warmer than gray that's still concrete. The price moves with how big the floor is, whether an old coating or glue has to come off, how much crack repair it needs and how many colors you want. The schedule mostly depends on the slab itself, because a new slab has to finish curing and a damp one has to dry out before any stain goes on. If you'd rather have a smooth shine than color, polished concrete is the other way to go, and I'll walk you through both and put your own figure in a written estimate.
What our stained concrete flooring work includes
Before we stain anything, we tape plastic to the slab and leave it overnight, because if moisture comes up under it, the stain and sealer won't hold, and I'd rather know that up front. Any old paint, sealer or coating comes off next, since stain only colors concrete it can soak into, and then we fix cracks and clean the floor down to bare concrete. I'll lay out both acid and water based color options so you see the full range before you choose. Then we put the stain down, let it dry and seal it.
Some floors call for more than color. If you want stone or glass chips set into the surface for pattern, terrazzo flooring is the step up from stain. If your slab is below ground, our basement flooring work starts with the same moisture check, because that's where water shows up first.
Stained concrete flooring and permits in Calexico
The city's rules don't say whether staining a floor needs a permit, so I'll tell you at the estimate whether your job needs one. If it does, we handle the paperwork and book the inspections with the City of Calexico Building Division, which checks plans, issues building permits and makes sure work meets code and state rules. If a homeowner pulls the permit as an owner-builder, the city's form makes them the responsible party on it, and the form says hiring a licensed contractor who files the permit in your name is one way to protect yourself from that financial risk. Imperial County's air district also has a rule on architectural coatings that covers anyone who sells, supplies or applies them in the county, so keeping our stains and sealers in line with it is our job, not yours.
Most floors we stain here are slabs poured right on the ground, often with carpet glue, tile adhesive or old paint left on them, so stripping and cleaning is a bigger part of the job than people expect. We see the same floors on jobs in El Centro and Heber. We're based in Calexico and work in the cities around it, so if you don't see yours on our site, call and ask.

What happens when you call Calexico Precision Epoxy Flooring in Calexico?
Call or send us a message
Call (442) 250-4457 any day from 7 AM to 10 PM, or use the form, and tell us roughly how big the floor is. We'll get back to you and set a time for me to come out.
I check the slab myself
I look over the floor, check it for moisture and cracks, and go over your color options with you. You get a written estimate that lists what the job covers, so you know the price before anything starts.
We prep, stain and seal
Our crew preps the concrete, puts the stain down and seals it once the stain is dry. Clearing the room ahead of time helps, because the stain has to go onto bare, clean concrete.
Walk the finished floor together
When it's done, we walk the floor with you and look at the color in your own light. I'll also tell you what upkeep to plan so it keeps looking the way it does that day.
Why Calexico homeowners call Calexico Precision Epoxy Flooring for stained floors
Started here in Calexico in 2023
I grew up fixing things on my family's farm and learned concrete prep and coatings on other crews before I started this business in Calexico in 2023. That's why I put the time into the slab under the stain, since that's the part that decides whether a floor holds.
The owner stays on your job
I'm the one who looks at your floor and writes the estimate, and I'm on site with our crew while the work gets done. If a color or a spot on the slab raises a question partway through, you're asking the person who planned the job.
Licensed and fully insured here
In California, someone without a contractor's license can only take on minor work up to $1,000, and only when the job needs no permit and they have nobody working for them. We're licensed and fully insured, so a bigger floor or a permit doesn't change whether we can take the job.
Stain shows whatever is underneath it, so the first step is letting me look at your slab. Ask for an estimate or call (442) 250-4457.

Questions about stained concrete in Calexico
How much does stained concrete flooring cost in Calexico?
Across the US, staining an existing concrete floor usually costs about $3 to $15 per square foot, including labor. Where your floor lands depends on its size, whether an old coating has to come off and how many colors you want. Your written estimate from us spells that out for your slab.
How long does a stained concrete floor last?
A stained floor usually lasts 5 to 20 years with regular maintenance, which means waxing or sealing it every 1 to 3 years. Plan for that wax or seal coat as a repeat cost over the life of the floor, because it's what keeps the color protected.
Can I get stained concrete in colors other than brown and green?
Yes, water-based stain made with iron oxide pigment comes in a much wider range of colors. Acid stain sticks to rust, dark browns, blues and greens. Water-based stain also has fewer steps, because once it's dry the floor is ready for sealer with no cleaning, neutralizing or scrubbing first.
Who issues building permits in Calexico?
The City of Calexico Building Division issues building permits, does plan checks and checks that work meets code and state rules. You can reach the city's Planning & Building Department at 760-768-2105. On our jobs, we make that call for you if a permit is needed.
How long does it take to stain a concrete floor?
Staining a concrete floor usually takes 1 to 3 days, including drying time. It has to wait until the concrete is fully cured, so a new slab adds time before the work can start.
How do I know if my concrete floor is ready for stain?
Your floor is ready when it's fully cured, dry and bare, and one stain maker's guide says the concrete should be at least four weeks old. If your slab is newer than that, plan the staining for later. Dampness shows up on the overnight plastic test we do first, and any old coating has to come off before stain goes down.
Other floors we can help with
Terrazzo Flooring
If you want stone or glass chips set right into the floor for pattern and texture, terrazzo gives you more to look at than color alone.
Basement Flooring
A floor below ground deals with more moisture than most, so we test the slab first and pick a finish it can actually hold onto.
Book an estimate for your stained floor
